On a stepped flywheel, the friction surface is raised 0.100" or 2.54 mm from the clutch mounting surface, and the inner sides of the clutch cover legs are centered against this raised step, while the bottom of the legs fits into the bottom surface of the step

A pot-type flywheel has its friction surface level with the clutch mounting surface, and the outside of the legs of the clutch cover fit against a machined stop.
